Science & research in the Leading-Edge Cluster region
OstWestfalenLippe is a scientific center that is characterized by its numerous strong partners and considerable skill in problem solving. Renowned universities, scientific laboratories and institutes support the companies in the region by acting as innovation partners.
There are six universities involved in the Leading-Edge Cluster it's OWL: Bielefeld University, Paderborn University, University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen-Lippe, Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Hamm-Lippstadt University of Applied Sciences and the private university of applied economic sciences, Fachhochschule der Wirtschaft (FHDW). They are known for cutting-edge interdisciplinary research in the fields of self-optimization, cognition and industrial automation, and focus on areas of study that are complementary in many respects. Around EUR 300 million has been invested in research infrastructure in the past five years.
Outstanding pure research is carried out by the Cognitive Interaction Technology Center of Excellence (CITEC) at Bielefeld University and three collaborative research centers. Four research institutes also play an important role: the Heinz Nixdorf Institute (Paderborn University), the CoR-Lab Research Center for Cognition and Robotics (Bielefeld University), the Institute of Industrial IT (University of Applied Sciences Ostwestfalen-Lippe) and the Institute of System Dynamics and Mechatronics (Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences).
In addition to this, there are numerous research institutes that work with businesses to find applications for research results, such as the Fraunhofer IEM (Paderborn) and the Fraunhofer IOSB Industrial Automation application center (Lemgo).
Overall, there are around 1,000 scientists involved in intelligent technical systems research in OstWestfalenLippe. Renowned groups such as Audi, Boeing, Fujitsu, Honda and Siemens have chosen to work with research institutes in the region.
