Live the good life – in town or in the country
Not only does the OstWestfalenLippe region offer attractive commercial and scientific career opportunities, it is also a wonderful place to live. From rural areas to attractive mid-sized towns like Gütersloh, Detmold, Minden and Herford or major cities such as Bielefeld and Paderborn – OWL has something to suit every taste, all in prime locations and with affordable housing.
The region is situated at the heart of Germany and Europe. There are fast road links in all directions, with the A2, A30 and A44 highways running east to west and the A7 and A1 offering connections to the north and south. With an intercity rail station in Bielefeld and an airport in Paderborn, OWL is also well connected to local public transport.
There are magnificent natural areas to discover and enjoy in the Teutoburg Forest, Wiehen and Egge hills, on the Senne, and along the Weser, Ems and Lippe rivers. There are excellent trails catering to recreational hikers and cyclists, and a great many interesting places to visit, including historic old towns, the Hermann Monument and the Externsteine rock formation.
You can immerse yourself in the fascinating world of history, technology and art at more than 100 museums. The MARTa museum in Herford (designed by star architect Frank O. Gehry) and the Kunsthalle Bielefeld art gallery stage internationally renowned exhibitions, while the Heinz Nixdorf Museum and Forum in Paderborn is the largest computer museum in the world.
There is top-class tennis every year at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, and both football and handball fans get their money’s worth with Arminia Bielefeld, SC Paderborn, TBV Lemgo and GWD Minden.
Rounding off the list of things to do, you can also enjoy traditional festivals, great theater and cabaret, and attractive sports facilities including 17 golf courses and the largest gliding field in Europe.
